Can I take RESTUBE safety buoy on the airplane?
Yes, you can transport your RESTUBE Safety Buoy on an airplane. However, there are a few rules that should be followed.
Quick overview
-
Safety Suoy without CO₂ cartridge: Transport possible without restrictions
-
RESTUBE CO₂ cartridges (16 g / 10.9 g): Are pressurized and considered dangerous goods in air transport
-
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA), up to two cartridges per safety buoy are allowed on airplanes
-
In the United States (TSA), cartridges are only allowed together with the safety buoy
-
The final decision always lies with the airline, security personnel, or the pilot
Important steps for bringing RESTUBE on an airplane
1. Contact the airline before departure
Inform the airline about your safety buoy and the number of CO₂ cartridges you are carrying. Ideally, do this directly after booking or at least 48 hours before departure.
Ask the airline for written confirmation (e.g., by email) and carry a copy with you.
2. Transport the safety buoy and CO₂ cartridges separately
Carefully open the Velcro closure of the pouch and remove the buoy from the bag without triggering it.
Then unscrew the CO₂ cartridges from the safety buoy.
3. Store the CO₂ cartridges, documents, and buoy together in a transparent bag
According to IATA regulations, up to two CO₂ cartridges per safety buoy may be carried on board. Place the cartridges together with the information flyer “Flying with RESTUBE” — included in every RESTUBE package and also available here (BEACH 10.0 g CO2 Cartidges or all other safety buoys with 16 g CO2 Cartridges) – as well as the LBA or TSA information documents in a transparent resealable plastic bag. Also include the confirmation from the airline.
4. Carry the CO₂ cartridges in your hand luggage
We recommend transporting the safety buoy including the CO₂ cartridges only in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage.
This allows you to explain the product to security personnel if necessary.
The safety buoy without CO₂ cartridges may also be transported in checked baggage.
Alternative: Travel without CO₂ cartridges
If you want to avoid any risk, you can travel without cartridges and inflate the Safety Buoy manually by mouth at your destination.
Please note that when using the safety buoy without a screwed-in cartridge, a trigger protector should be used to protect the internal triggering mechanism.
Important notice
Not all airport or ground staff are familiar with these regulations.
Following the steps above may increase your chances of being allowed to carry CO₂ cartridges, but transport cannot be guaranteed, as the final decision always lies with airport security, the airline, or the responsible pilot.
From our experience, flights to or from Egypt can sometimes cause issues because security regulations are occasionally interpreted more strictly. For travel to Egypt, we therefore recommend travelling without CO₂ cartridges.
